Save the Trail! 5K set for Saturday May 26, 2012

The Third Annual Save the Trail! 5K will be held Saturday May 26th, starting at 9 a.m. in Elm Street Park in Chevy Chase. On-line registration closes this Wednesday, so local runners are being encouraged to enter now. Walk-up registration will be available on race day beginning at 7:30 a.m.

The 5K supports the efforts of Friends of the Capital Crescent Trail, a local non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and protecting park land, open space and quality of life in lower Montgomery County.

The group’s top priority is halting plans to construct the Purple Line transit project on a three mile section of the trail between Bethesda and Silver Spring.

“The current plan for the Purple Line is unacceptable,” said the group’s president Ajay Bhatt. “It would turn a bucolic tree-canopied nature trail into a shadeless strip of asphalt next to twin sets of railroad tracks beneath high-power lines at a cost of $2 billion for the entire project. We’re for smart transit, not transit that destroys the beauty of our communities.”

The Save the Trail! 5K starts in Elm Street Park at 4601 Willow Lane in Chevy Chase and runs mostly on the adjacent Capital Crescent Trail. The race is chip-timed and the course is considered to be flat and fast.

The top three male and female finishers will receive $100, $50 and $25 gift certificates from the Chevy Chase Running Company store in Friendship Heights for their efforts. All runners will be entered into the post-race random prize drawing featuring about 25 prizes from local merchants.

Registration is $25 and runners signing up online by Wednesday May 23 receive a high-quality tech t-shirt, tote bag and valuable coupons.

Registration will also be held Friday May 25 from noon to 7 p.m. at the Chevy Chase Running Company store at 4461 Willard Avenue (across from Whole Foods) and at Elm Street Park on race day starting at 7:30 a.m.
